What to do first in a dental emergency
The first few minutes matter. Call us at (512) 651-3036, then follow these steps until you get to our office.
Knocked-out tooth
- EPick the tooth up by the crown (the chewing end). Don't touch the root.
- EIf it's dirty, rinse it gently with milk or water. Don't scrub it.
- ETry to place it back in the socket and bite down softly on gauze. If you can't, keep it in a cup of milk.
- EGet to a dentist right away. A knocked-out tooth has the best chance of being saved within 30 to 60 minutes.
Broken or chipped tooth
- ERinse your mouth with warm water.
- ESave any broken pieces and bring them with you.
- EHold a cold compress on your cheek to keep swelling down.
- EIf there's bleeding, press clean gauze on the area for about 10 minutes.
Lost crown or filling
- EKeep the crown and bring it to your visit.
- EIf the tooth isn't sore, you can slip the crown back on with temporary dental cement from a pharmacy. Never use super glue.
- EChew on the other side and skip sticky, very hot, or very cold foods.
- ECall us to have it recemented or replaced within a day or two.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the 3-3-3 rule for a toothache?
The 3-3-3 rule is a short-term way to manage dental pain: 3 ibuprofen tablets (200 mg each, 600 mg total), 3 times a day, for up to 3 days. It calms the inflammation behind most toothaches, but it doesn’t treat the cause. It isn’t safe for everyone, so check with your doctor or pharmacist first if you take blood thinners, have kidney or stomach problems, or are pregnant. If the pain is still there, call (512) 651-3036 so Dr. Yoon can find and treat the source of your tooth pain.
Will the ER help with a broken tooth?
An emergency room can ease pain, treat infection, and stop bleeding, but it can’t repair a broken tooth. Most ERs don’t have a dentist on staff, so you’ll still need a dentist for the fix. For a broken tooth in Round Rock, call Clearview Dental at (512) 651-3036. We strive to see dental emergencies the same day, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Is there an ER for dental problems?
Hospitals don’t have a separate ER for teeth. For most dental problems, an emergency dentist is the right place to go. Go to the nearest ER or call 911 if you have facial swelling that makes it hard to breathe or swallow, bleeding that won’t stop after 15 minutes of pressure, a possible broken jaw, or a fever with swelling in your face. For everything else, call our Round Rock office at (512) 651-3036.
What counts as a tooth emergency?
A tooth emergency is any dental problem that needs care the same day to stop pain, stop bleeding, or save a tooth. That includes a knocked-out tooth, a cracked or broken tooth, a severe toothache, an abscess or swelling, and a lost crown or filling that hurts. A small chip with no pain can usually wait a day or two. If you’re not sure, call us at (512) 651-3036 and we’ll help you decide.
